Unit X 2016

Unit X 2016 Identity

Every year the Manchester School of Art, of which I am a graduate, holds a catalogue of events and workshops for its students with cross-course collaboration at its heart. Students are encouraged to apply their skills and conceptual thinking within a wider range of practices. The fruits of their labour are exhibited at an event located in a different venue around Manchester each year. The initiative is called Unit X. I designed an identity proposal for the 2016 edition.

Unit X 2016 Identity

The identity I designed was based around a modular pattern made up of the 'U' and the 'X' in the event name. In a nod to the collaborative nature of the event, the 'X' strokes form connection strands. The flexible nature of this identity meant that materials could be tailor made to suit their application in terms of scale and use. I also suggested that the colour scheme of the identity could change each year without compromising the overall integrity to give each year its own distinctive but consistent look.

Sadly, because of the 'unique' way these projects are organised, this identity never got past the proposal stage as there was simply too little time between it and the first of the events. It was decided that the existing identity should continue to be used for the time being. Nevertheless, the identity was very well-received among management and I'm still very happy with it as a piece of work. You win some, you lose some.
